Rabies Prevention Encouraged

Lambton Public Health is stressing the importance of getting your pet vaccinated for rabies.

Health Inspector Michael Richardson says dogs and cats are required by law to be vaccinated.

He says vaccinating your pet is the best way to protect it from the virus.

"Avoid contact with strays and don't pet animals that you don't know," says Richardson.

"You always want to control your pets and don't let them run free, especially at night when these critters are out and about. Don't touch animals that look sick even if you want to help them, especially wild animals, including bats."

Richardson says the symptoms of rabies include an apprehensive feeling, numbness around the wound site, paralysis and psychological effects.

If you see an animal acting strangely you can report it to the Ministry of Natural Resources Rabies hot line at 1-888-574-6656.
