City To Improve Established Bike Routes

Work will be done to enhance and build onto Sarnia's established bike routes this summer.

Development Manager Mike Berkvens provided city council with an update on implementing the transportation master plan Monday.

He says staff will add to signage installed by the Bluewater Trails Committee to establish bike routes on residential roads.

"Right now the signage is pretty sporadic," says Berkvens. "So we'll be putting up signs and symbols on asphalt to help bikers and vehicles identify that there are bikers in that area."

Berkvens says the signs on MacKenzie, Cameron, Oak, Devine, Landsdowne and Maria are so minimal that if riders miss them they easily become lost.

He says staff are taking some tips from the city of Portland, Oregon.

"They have twelve months of riding, versus our seasonal riding," says Berkvens. "It's an area that's very progressive and we are trying to mimic what they've done."

$70,000 has been allocated toward bike route and symbol improvements in this years capital budget.

$110,000 will be spent on sidewalk improvements and accessible ramps.
