Fireworks Safety Tips For The Long Weekend

Sarnia Fire & Rescue Services has tips to help us celebrate Canada Day safely.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis says conditions are pretty dry heading into the long weekend.

He says anyone planning on hosting their own fireworks display have rules to follow.

"All fireworks displays should be held at a safe distance from all streets, highways, buildings or other structures and the person setting off the fireworks shall take every reasonable precaution for the safety of others and provide a means of extinguishment," says Otis. "The person setting off fireworks also takes responsibility for any personal injury, property damage, claims, causes of action or damages."

People can set off fireworks only on their own property, they're not allowed in public parks.

Otis says sky lanterns are banned again this year.

He says adults should always be present if sparklers are being used, because they can heat up to 1200 F.
