Sarnia's police chief doesn't support proposed by-law changes to allow bicycles on city sidewalks.
The city's engineer is going to draft a report on modernizing the by-law, something proposed by resident Hal Regnier at a previous council meeting.
Phil Nelson says allowing bikes on sidewalks would be a major safety issue for pedestrians.
Right now, only bikes 21'' and smaller are permitted.
"Bikes probably shouldn't be on the sidewalk unless it's young children," says Nelson.
"I have a young granddaughter that has a bicycle that has little wheels on it and we take her down the sidewalk where I know it's safe."
"That's different than someone who is an adult flying down the sidewalk at 40mph and hits a pedestrian or goes out on the crosswalk."
Nelson says safety is everyone's responsibility, and says both cyclists and drivers need to pay close attention.
He says there have been a number of cases where bikes have been struck trying to ride across the crosswalk.
