Possible construction of a world-class polyethylene plant in St. Clair Township is the subject of a public meeting Monday.
Nova Chemicals has submitted an application to the township's committee of adjustment seeking relief from the zoning bylaw's building height restriction.
The company is asking that the maximum height of 14 m (46 ft) be increased to 93 m (305 ft) to permit industrial structures like stacks and vessels.
The application is for Nova property, already zoned heavy industrial, north of Rokeby Line and east of Hwy. 40 at the company's Corunna site.
St. Clair Township Mayor Steve Arnold says Nova needs a number of approvals before it decides whether to go ahead with the new plant, estimated to cost $1-billion to $2-billion.
"We're really excited that it's come along this far," says Arnold. "I am very optimistic that everything is going to fall into place and we've made a commitment from the township staff's point of view as well as the St. Clair Region and other agencies, that we're going to make sure that there's no stumbling blocks here for them, in process, and that we keep moving everything through in an expedient manner."
Mayor Arnold still expects Nova will make its decision sometime after the first quarter of 2017.
He says it's very important that they maintain the public process to make sure people have their voices heard.
The committee of adjustment hearing is Monday, September 26 at 7:30pm in the council chambers at the St. Clair Township Civic Centre on Emily St. in Mooretown.
