Cornwall Hydro Bills Lowest In The Province

The Ontario Clean Air Alliance says Bluewater Power consumers pay 26% more on their monthly residential electricity bill than Cornwall Electric consumers.

Chair Jack Gibbons says the bill for a typical resident using 750 kWh is $152 in Sarnia, compared to $120 in Cornwall.

He says the City of Cornwall has the lowest bills in Ontario because it buys lower-cost water power from Hydro Quebec.

"Quebec is our next door neighbour, and it's the fourth largest producer of water power in the world and it has the lowest electricity rates in North America and it also has a large surplus of power that it's exporting to the United States," says Gibbons. "What we're saying is that Premier Wynne should sign out a long term deal with Hydro Quebec to allow us to import low cost water power."

He says the Ontario government has the ability to import the power through its existing connections with Hydro Quebec.

Gibbons says it would help keep our lights on at a much lower cost than rebuilding the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.

The $12.8-billion refurbishment of four nuclear reactors at the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) station just east of Toronto is slated to begin in October.
