International String Of Popcorn Joins Sombra, Marine City

Sombra, Ontario and Marine City, Michigan were connected by a string of popcorn Sunday night.

St. Clair Township Mayor Steve Arnold was invited to help the Michigan community try to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest international popcorn string.

"That's the first time I've ever been requested to be on the receiving end of a mile long string of popcorn," Steve Arnold says laughing.  "But what a great night. We thought it was going to rain, they were really concerned earlier in the day and had a couple of rain delays of course, so when it finally went off everyone was very gracious and things worked out really well."

Mayor Arnold says it actually took two attempts after the string snapped the first time.

"I think he was trying to go just a little too fast, but he did it back up and away they went again and came across."

About 70 people gathered near the Bluewater Ferry to watch the record attempt, but only Arnold and Sombra Museum Curator Shelley Lucier were allowed out on the ferry dock to receive the string of popcorn.

It was part of a Pumpkins, Popcorn and Politics event which set goals for several world record attempts, including having the highest voter turnout for a Michigan community.

The popcorn record has to go through several certifications before becoming official.
