Charges To Be Laid After Apartment Building Fills With Carbon Monoxide

A property owner is facing charges after a potentially life threatening situation was averted at a Sarnia apartment building.

Sarnia Fire Rescue Services says on Wednesday, fire crews were called to the building on Wellington St. near Lansdowne Ave., by a resident who was concerned about a smell. Upon arrival, firefighters were able to quickly detect 400 parts per million of carbon monoxide in the building, which could have been life threatening within three hours.

Ten people were in the apartment building at the time.

The leak was caused by a malfunctioning appliance in the service room that was running and spewing carbon monoxide throughout the entire building.

Fire officials say the building did not have adequate carbon monoxide detectors and the concentration was reportedly getting worse.

An investigation is ongoing and fire officials say charges are currently pending against the building owner.
