Mayor Calls For Bravery Award

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley is asking council to establish a bravery award to honour those who go above and beyond.

He decided to do so after hearing about Sarnian Matt Gordon who, along with Sarnia firefighter Jim Rose, helped save the life of a man and his dog whose boat capsized in Lake Huron near Riding Club Lane in early September.

"It was brought to my attention by a member of the fire service that there should be some sort of recognition," he says. "It turns out that we don't have a bravery award from the city. The police have awards related to what they do and what the public does but the city itself does not recognize those who go beyond the call of duty, risking their lives to save the lives of others."

Mayor Bradley says the Award would be modeled on one similar in London, decided upon by emergency officials with the individuals recognized in a plaque presentation at City Hall.
