Sarnia's Population Trends Shift

A new independent study is disputing the belief that Sarnia is a retirement community.

BMA Management Consulting has found that 59% of the population is between the ages of 20 and 64.

21% is aged 0-19, two percentage points more than the 65-plus demographic.

Mayor Mike Bradley says the population is also growing in size

"I think it's important that the population has grown by almost 4%," he says. "That's not yet the Ontario average, but it's a significant increase over our previous growth when we look back over the past decade or so."

Bradley says shifting demographics are a result of what's occurring at Lambton College, the Research Park and the Economic Partnership and the revitalization of downtown. He says all three are slowly attracting a creative class of young people who want to be in a community that's low cost and energetic to be in.
