Sarnia's Senior Demographic Well Above National Average

The number of Sarnia residents 65 or older is trending nearly five percentage points above the national average.

2016 census data released Wednesday shows 21.7% of city residents are in that demographic compared to the nationwide average of 16.9%.

The new figures underscore the need for an Age-Friendly Action Plan that is being developed for the city.

Accessibility Coordinator Dale Mosley says over 40 recommendations made by residents during community summits are being reviewed. He says the need for improved communication and social inclusion were identified.

"What we know is we have great services, we have a lot to offer our community and there are people out there who are helping, of all ages, helping people," says Mosley. "But we found out that there wasn't enough information going to those people that needed it. So, how do we make that better? How do we ensure that people know what is being offered in our community?"

The plan focuses on developing strategies for residents as they age by creating both physical and social environments that support independence of active aging.

Mosley says it's expected the action plan will be rolled out before year's end.
