Talks Planned To Avoid Strike

A last ditch attempt will be made this week to avert a strike by about 40 library and art gallery workers in Sarnia.

Unifor Local 65 National Rep Glenn Sonier says they'll meet with Lambton County negotiators on Thursday.

"I think there may have been some miscommunication, but obviously now both parties have connected and see fit to put together a few hours they can meet," says Sonier. "Hopefully we can resolve the matter and put things to rest."

A mediator failed to get the two sides to agree to terms. The workers' last contract expired December 31, 2016.

They're threatening to walk off the job Monday, September 11 if a deal is not reached before then. If that occurs, the county says the downtown Sarnia Library and the Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery will be closed.

The renowned "Witness: Canadian Art of the First World War" exhibit just opened last Friday at the downtown gallery. It features never-seen-before paintings and is expected to draw thousands of visitors.
