New Sign Welcomes Centennial Park Visitors

If you're heading to Centennial Park, you'll notice a brand new entrance sign at Exmouth St. and Venetian Blvd.

It's the third Communities in Bloom has erected in less than a year. The others are at Centennial Park's Front St. entrance and Germain Park off of East St.

Chair Anne Marie Gillis says artist Dave Beatty is responsible for the hand carved signs which she says capture the essence of the community.

"When we won the international competitions, one of the things that the judges did point out to us was that we have beautiful parks, but the signage for the parks doesn't reflect the actual parks themselves," says Gillis. "When we decided to step back from actual competition, over the past couple of years, we decided that we would concentrate on fundraising so that we could get some really beautiful signs made."

The signs cost a total of $25,000 to put up. All of the funds were raised through the sale of backyard makeover lottery tickets.

Gillis hopes another sign will be put up at Canatara Park soon.

She thanks the Bluewaterland Rotary Club, DeGroots Nurseries, Praill's Greenhouse, Dowler Karn, and McKellar's Flowers who helped make the signage possible.
