Compost Changes Coming To Petrolia

Environment Ministry mandated upgrades to the Petrolia's compost site have been estimated at over $500,000.

Mayor John McCharles says staff is working with Waste Management because the compost site on Maude St. was no longer economically feasible.

"I don't think we can afford to have our own compost site any longer," says McCharles. "We kind of got away with it for a while until the Environment Minister came in and shut us down. Now we're looking at other options and Waste Management seems to be that option."

Holding up to 20 collection days annually at the waste management site on Progress Dr. would cost about $60,000.

McCharles says they're looking at picking up brush at curbside instead of composting it, as well as possible cost-cutting measures.

"The Maude St. site will have to be decommissioned," he says. "There is a cost to that but there are ways and means to get away with some of those costs like giving away some of the compost that's there, making it a little easier to decommission."
