Twin Creeks: Biggest Landfill In Canada?

Warwick Township Mayor Todd Case says the Environment Ministry has approved a fill rate increase at Waste Management's Twin Creeks site on Nauvoo Rd.

It will be allowed to increase the amount of waste it receives from 750,000 tonnes to 1.4-million tonnes annually.

Case says their request for a daily inspector at the mega-dump has been denied.

"The inspection rate will increase from once monthly to once weekly," says Case. "We are disappointed with that. We asked for a full-time inspector and ironically, Waste Management supported that request, that was originally in effect before being cut back."

Case says they feel very strongly about the issue.

"You're talking about a site that was originally 55,000 tonnes," he says. "That went to 750,000 tonnes and very quickly was approved to go up to 1.4-million. To be honest with you, this will be one of the largest landfills in the country. It's only two km away from Watford. There will be lots of impacts on the community. Waste Management has shown thus far to run a fairly good site but now we're talking a huge, mega site, so that's why we feel daily inspections are needed."

Twin Creeks opened in 1972 and accepts municipal, industrial, commercial and institutional solid non-hazardous waste including contaminated soil.

Company spokesman Reid Cleland has previously told Blackburn News he expects the fill rate to increase gradually, and not all at once.
