No Change To Sarnia's Waste Program

Sarnia council has decided not to change the city's waste and recycling programs. Council voted Monday to maintain the current waste collection bag limit of three per week for residential properties and six for commercial properties. Councillor Brian White felt residents could have handled a reduced limit. "At the home show every year, when I stand with fellow volunteers from the Environmental Advisory Committee, it's amazing how many people specifically want to discuss how far behind we are in this municipality in terms of waste diversion," White said. "If it's that odd week that you have to go over, just go buy a bag tag." But, Councillor Bev MacDougall disagreed. "It's easy to say just go buy a bag tag, but it's not easy for somebody who doesn't have enough money in their household to buy a bag of milk," said MacDougall. Even though the bag limits were maintained, many councillors are encouraged that the province is planning to move forward with its organics action plan -- which includes a possible ban on sending green waste to landfill. Council also voted to maintain the use of clear plastic bags for waste collection and turned down a recommendation to adjust the pricing for recycling and bulk collection programs to accommodate a wheel cart program for recycling.
