402 Safety To Be Reviewed

Sarnia's mayor is glad to hear the province is looking into Hwy. 402 safety concerns -- but wants to make sure the investigation goes one step further.

In a reply to Mike Bradley's letter, Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca says ministry staff are reviewing the Hwy. 402 approach to the Blue Water Bridge following two tragic crashes within a week, back in July.

Del Duca says they're looking at a number of elements including speed, signing, collision history and other factors that could help increase safety.

He says they're also working with the Federal Bridge Corporation to identify possible improvements to traffic operations on the approach to the toll plaza and with the Ontario Provincial Police to address truck speed concerns and commercial vehicles following too close.

Mayor Bradley says the people who frequently travel along that stretch need to be consulted as well.

"I think what they need to do now is open this up for public comment, not just do an internal study or internal review that wouldn't have the input of the very people that use that highway in this area and the people who go through on this highway," says Bradley.

Del Duca said in August he was looking forward to speaking with Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey and community stakeholders. Although, a date has never been set.

Mayor Bradley has asked Bailey to raise the need for public input with the minister again.
