The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton is giving the North Lambton Community Health Centre $30,000 to expand its Doors Open program.
It helps those dealing with severe mental health issues and offers cooking classes, time management, and life skills and physical activity sessions.
United Way spokesperson Pam Gallant says they've been funding Doors Open in Sarnia since 2016, but demand has increased.
"Bluewater Health does refer clients to the program, but it can also be self-referral," says Gallant. "So if clients would like to get involved with the program, they can call either the West Lambton Community Health Centre in Sarnia or the North Lambton Community Health Centre in Forest."
Gallant says those taking advantage of the Doors Open cooking classes in Sarnia have nearly doubled in recent years.
She says most people in the current program, which served 167 clients during its first year, reported improved nutritious eating habits, and demonstrated an increase in fitness and mental health levels.
United Way's funding is in place until March 31, 2019.
