Sarnia's Great Lakes Secondary School students will stay put at the former SCITS on Wellington St. longer than planned.
The Lambton Kent District School Board was told Thursday morning by the contractor, Jasper Construction Corp., that the Murphy Rd. school will not be ready for occupancy in September.
Superintendent of Business Brian McKay says they're hopeful the delays are just going to extend into mid-fall.
"The delays we're experiencing are not unique to our project, delays in finding skilled trades throughout the province are causing delays in the project," he says. "So, we're going to continue to monitor throughout the summer and have ongoing meetings with the contractor."
McKay says they hope to have an occupancy date determined by mid-September.
He says despite the delay in completing the expansion and renovation at the former St. Clair Secondary School, the $23.4-million cost remains the same.
The school board received a $10.3-million capital investment from the Ministry of Education for the project which will include a new auditorium, Indigenous community room, updated classrooms and accessibility improvements.
