Upcoming Closures Set For Howard Watson Trail

Crews will be working to eradicate phragmites along Sarnia's Howard Watson Nature Trail this week.

A moving closure is planned[weather permitting] between Exmouth St. north to Retford Ave. Monday and Tuesday, between 7am and 4pm, to roll the invasive perennial grass.

Sarnia's Supervisor of Horticulture, Forestry and Naturalization Chuck Toth says the trail will then be closed Wednesday and Thursday for touch up spraying.

"This should be it for this area," says Toth. "Usually it's two phases and then it should be pretty much eradicated after that."

A spotter will be on site watching for pedestrians who inadvertently enter the trail near the work zone and nearby homeowners will be notified. Signs will also be posted in advance.

Toth says the area has a high concentration of phragmites, and has been problematic with fires in the past.

Once the phragmites are cleared out of the area, a seed mix will be applied to allow native species to return to the area.
