West Nile virus, Lyme disease still a threat

Lambton Public Health is reminding us to protect ourselves from mosquitoes and ticks to guard against West Nile virus and Lyme disease.

Health Protection Supervisor Lori Lucas said the pesky bugs will continue to breed until we see frost and much colder temperatures.

The health unit said the reminder follows confirmation Tuesday that a second mosquito pool in Corunna tested positive for West Nile virus.

In July, a dead crow found in Sarnia's north end also tested positive for the virus. No human cases have been reported.

West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. However, the majority of people infected with the virus do not get sick. Those that do, usually experience mild flu-like symptoms like fever, headache, skin rash or muscle aches.
