Poignant ceremony honours veterans

It's a sombre remembrance of those who fought and made the ultimate sacrifice, or those who fought and are still dealing with the aftereffects.

Spokesman Les Jones said the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62 in Sarnia is hosting its eighth annual Candlelight Tribute on Saturday, November 10.

"Participants can buy a candle for $5 in memory of a family member who has served, or is serving, or you can buy a candle for an unknown soldier or anyone else," said Jones. "We meet at city hall at 7 p.m. We light the candles. We have a short parade down to the Legion to our Cenotaph out front and we have a ceremony of remembrance. We place our candles in front of the Cenotaph. Members of the Cadet Corp will stand vigil all night until the next day, so it's a very touching ceremony."

Jones is hoping there will be a larger than normal turnout because this year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War, World War I.

Because of the armistice anniversary, Sarnia's Remembrance Day service this year will be held indoors at Sarnia Arena.
