Hugs for Homeless reaching out to 'couch surfers'

There are 250 homeless youths in Sarnia, aged 16 to 18, either couch surfing or living in a vacant building.

You can help them out by donating items that just need water like instant soup, oatmeal, Mr. Noodles, or mac and cheese.

It's part of the St. Vincent de Paul Society's "Hugs for the Homeless - Just Add Water" program.

Spokesperson Helen Van Sligtenhorst said donations go a long way.

"If you're couch surfing, you're taking a duffel bag," said Van Sligtenhorst. "You don't have a cutting board, you don't have a knife, you don't have a crock pot. So, you're just going from home to home with a duffel bag which is why these things fit."

Van Sligtenhorst said they've had great community support, including from an anonymous donor whose daughter was homeless.

"This does not have to cost a lot of money," said Van Sligtenhorst. "I had an anonymous donor that said 'I don't want to be recognized, I don't want a tax receipt, but I've had some experience with homelessness in my family'. She's on the other side, they've come through it and the child is now relatively successful."

Things like mugs, soaps, shampoo, and yarn for church ladies to knit wash cloths are also being accepted.

Items can be dropped off at St. Vincent de Paul, Harbour Bay Clothing, or at Blackburn Radio on London Road.
