Special Sarnia exhibit encourages dialogue on suicide

The Sarnia community is marking world suicide prevention month with a special downtown exhibit.

The "give hope a voice" display features photographs of community members who have been directly impacted by suicide.

Sarnia-Lambton Suicide Prevention Committee member Liz Page hopes seeing the photos will encourage people to have an open discussion about how they're feeling.

"Studies and evidence show that talking about suicide does not cause people to be suicidal or to complete suicide," said Page. "Talking about suicide opens the pathway so that folks can have an honest conversation with those who care about them, and receive support and maybe be directed to resources that are appropriate and helpful for them."

The photos, taken by Tiny Islands Photography, are being unveiled Friday night at Artopia at 188 Christina St. N.

They'll be on display until September 13.

Residents are also encouraged to tie a yellow ribbon around a tree or pillar as a show of support.

World suicide prevention day is Tuesday, September 10.
