Impaired driving victims remembered

MADD Sarnia-Lambton is holding its 13th annual candlelight vigil Thursday night in remembrance of those injured or killed by impaired driving.

Chapter President Charmaine Murray said the ceremony is rain or shine and candles will be provided.

She said there's never an excuse to drive impaired.

"Call a friend, call an Uber, walk, talk to the bus drivers because I'm sure they wouldn't refuse you either," said Murray. "There are a lot of things that people can do as well as just make sure that they're talking to their loved ones and speaking up when they see someone about to get into a vehicle that's impaired."

Each day, an average of 3.5 Canadians are killed by impaired driving and many others are injured.

Sarnia police have recently noticed an increase in drunk driving. Officers laid 38 drunk driving charges between January and July, compared to 24 during the same period in 2018.

The ceremony is being held at the at 7 p.m. at the MADD memorial bench in Centennial Park along the boardwalk north of London Road.

There will be a piper and an honour guard and they will do a short walk around the flag pole.
