Affordable housing strategy session Friday

A discussion focused on affordable housing in Lambton County is planned at the end of this week.

During his state-of-the-city address to Sarnia's Seaway Kiwanis Club Tuesday, Mayor Mike Bradley said he's been invited to a meeting with senior government representatives.

"There's a meeting on Friday to talk about affordable housing with non-profits, private sector, public sector, and out of that, I'm hoping there's a couple strategies that we can move forward on," said Bradley.

Mayor Bradley liked an idea raised by Kiwanis members to ask for a mixture of high end units and affordable units in new builds, saying he's "moving in that direction."

"There's no question with the growth of the real estate market, the prosperity of the real estate market and the general economy, it's had an impact on the rental market and that's where people are getting squeezed, big time. Prices for rents have risen substantially."

Bradley said Friday's meeting has been called by Sarnia-Lambton MP Marilyn Gladu.

He said Sarnia's Chief Administrative Officer Chris Carter and Warden Bill Weber were also invited.

The County of Lambton has been working to develop a strategy to address the housing crisis.
