May weather extremes, heat warning now in effect

Summer time heat has arrived after what's been a very cool spring so far.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning for Sarnia-Lambton Monday morning.

The weather agency said hot weather will continue through Wednesday.

High daytime temperatures near 30 C, 86 F, are forecast Monday afternoon and are expected to be slightly higher Tuesday and Wednesday. Humidex values in the mid to upper 30s are also expected although there may be some relief near the lakeshore.

Meteorologist Gerald Cheng said we've gone from one extreme to the other this month. In fact May 8, unofficially, was the coldest in Sarnia since 1983.

"I think a lot of people have waited really long for this, I don't know if people remember two weeks ago, it was quite cold, temperatures down to 8 degrees, it was single digits," said Cheng. "People didn't like that and certainly now, what a change in pattern, and we're now looking at higher levels of humidity and heat."

Residents should stay in a cool place and are reminded to drink plenty of water even before feeling thirsty. People or pets should never be left inside a parked vehicle.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Temperatures at this time of year normally reach a high of 22 C, 72 F, with lows around 10 C.

Thunderstorms are possible in the heat and humidity, more so with the approach of a cold front at midweek.
