Area anglers set for first fishing derby since 2019

The Sarnia-Lambton area is set to host its first fishing derby in two years.

The Bluewater Anglers' Walleye Derby gets going Friday at 6 p.m., with weigh-ins starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Events Coordinator Ben McIntyre said the club is very excited to be back providing these events to the community.

"Our club typically hosts five fishing derbies in a year, of which are the big Salmon Derby and then four smaller, single-day derbies.  So the small tournaments typically pay out all the ticket sales into prizes, so we're really just trying to break even," he said.  "The point is not really to make money but to engage with the community, promote fishing and conservation, and hopefully attract some new members."

McIntyre said they're hoping for a big turnout.

"Our record turnout was 130 tickets in 2018, so it would be great if we can top that," he said.  "When I dropped the tickets off at The Outdoorsman, they said that some customers had already been asking about the derby. The fish are biting really good right now too, just take a look under the bridge at the mouth and count the number of boats."

McIntyre said the Anglers have over $1,000 in cash prizes to be awarded to the top 10 biggest fish, and that the Village of Point Edward will be providing a $500 first prize for the biggest fish.

Tickets for the derby are $15 and can be purchased at The Outdoorsman or Buck's Bait.
