Weir touted as potential 2024 Presidents Cup captain in Montreal

Bright's Grove's Mike Weir is a strong candidate to captain the International team when the Presidents Cup returns to the Royal Montreal Golf Club in 2024.

The biennial event pits golfers from the United States against those from countries around the world outside of Europe.

The last time the event took place in Montreal was in 2007 when Weir defeated world number one Tiger Woods in a Sunday singles match. Weir won on the final hole when Woods hit his drive into the water. The U.S. team still won the event.

Weir became the first Canadian to play in the Presidents Cup when he debuted in 2000. He played five times, compiling a record of 13-9-2 and served as an assistant captain on the International team in 2017 and 2019.

He has indicated he would be honoured to serve as captain in 2024 if asked.

The 51-year-old lefty has 15 professional wins, and his eight on the PGA Tour ties him with the late George Knudson for the most by a Canadian.

Weir became a national hero in 2003 when he became the first Canadian to win a major, beating Len Mattiace in a playoff at the Masters.

Weir has nearly $28-million U.S. in career earnings, and was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.

The Sarnia native most recently tied for second place at the U.S. Senior Open Championship in July, and finished in a four-way tie for ninth at the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary this past weekend.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
