With a deadline quickly approaching, less than 10 nominations have been received so far for this year's Accessibility Awards.
Each year, the City of Sarnia recognizes those who have gone above and beyond to create an inclusive environment.
Accessibility Coordinator Dale Mosley said so far the nomination process is not going as well as they had hoped.
"We only have seven nominations right now. We're usually on par for over 20 at this time," he said.
Mosley said residents who know of a business or individual who makes an effort to accommodate seniors and those with disabilities, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, can fill out a nomination form online. Residents can also call (519) 332-0330 ext. 3307 or email access@sarnia.ca.
The City has been promoting the nomination process over social media this summer but Mosley said technically, nominations can be submitted throughout the year, starting in January.
Mosley said in past years, businesses have been nominated for installing ramps or automated doors; volunteer groups have also been nominated for taking initiative to support others.
"We've had some really, really good nominations in the past," he said. "We've had youth representatives, we've had individuals who definitely support people with disabilities, sports programs that are very inclusive."
The nomination deadline is September 10.
Award recipients will be announced during the first week of October during a council meeting, which is expected to be held virtually.
