Literacy Lambton hopes to collect 3,000 books for children

It's hoped at least 3,000 books will be distributed to children in need through Literacy Lambton's annual Give a Book campaign.

The organization is accepting donations of new and unwrapped books, until December 3.

Executive Director Tracy Pound said everything is needed from baby books to novels and educational books for teenagers.

"It's not just a book that you're giving to a child," said Pound. "You're giving them the opportunity to understand different perspectives, different world views and a better understanding of empathy and diversity.

Pound said last year's campaign generated 2,253 books which were distributed through 20 local agencies.

"This year, we're looking at social service agencies and nonprofits," she said. "That includes things like Christmas hampers, and client Christmas parties for different kids. We're looking at building up the number of agencies that participate and the number of books that are donated."

The Rotary Club of Sarnia have ignited this year's fundraiser with a $2,000 Action Grant.

Books can be dropped off at the Lochiel Kiwanis Centre at 180 College Ave. N, Coles Bookstore in Lambton Mall, or the Book Keeper in the Northgate Plaza.

Monetary donations can be made through www.literacylambton.org.
