Legion's annual poppy campaign underway

Sarnia-Lambton residents are being encouraged to wear a poppy this month in honour of Remembrance Day and our veterans.

Poppy boxes are set up at over 100 local businesses and thousands of the pins are available for a donation.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62 President Les Jones said they'll have volunteers stationed across the city, starting on November 5.

"This is the 100th anniversary of the poppy being used as the symbol of remembrance in Canada," said Jones. "All of the donations that we receive from the poppies go to the poppy trust fund."

Jones said the campaign wraps up November 12 when all of the boxes will be collected.

"The community here in Sarnia has always been very, very generous," he said. "We're happy this year that we can actually have some of our members out in the public actually pinning the poppies for people. Last year we couldn't do that, so we're really happy to return."

The initiative was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic.

In previous years, over $60,000 was raised to assist area veterans and their dependents, including things like medical appliances and transportation.
