Before turning off alarm clocks this weekend, residents are reminded to check other alarms in their homes.
Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 7.
Sarnia Fire Safety Educator Mike Otis said when changing the clocks, it's a good time to remember to change the batteries in fire and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.
"You should test your smoke and CO alarms at least once a month, change the batteries at least once a year, and replace the whole alarms every 10 years," he said. "All smoke and carbon monoxide alarms expire, including hardwired alarms."
Otis said residents with questions about their alarms can contact Sarnia Fire Services.
"The law in Ontario is to have a working smoke alarm in every storey of your home and outside of all sleeping areas. Also, it's law to have a working carbon monoxide alarm outside of all sleeping areas in any home with a fuel burning appliance," he said. "A lot of people associate carbon monoxide poisoning with furnaces but there's also hot water heaters, gas appliances, fire places, attached garages, et cetera. A lot of homes have four to six fuel burning appliances."
Meantime, there was some confusion recently as to when clocks were supposed to turn back an hour. Some Bell and Virgin Mobile customers reported having an incorrect time change on heir phones November 1. Bell issued an apology on Twitter and resolved the matter shortly after.
