The Lambton Kent District School Board is reassuring local families that a high school teacher, who was recently found guilty of sex-related charges, has not been at Great Lakes Secondary School since allegations against him surfaced last year.
Tyler Shaw was arrested in September 2020 for offences involving a high school age female student.
A letter from the Director of Education was posted on the school board's website Friday, in an effort to create an "open and transparent dialogue" with the community.
"I am writing to inform you that a former Great Lakes Secondary School teacher, Tyler Shaw, was found guilty of sexual assault and sexual exploitation. His sentencing date is to be determined," read John Howitt's statement. "The LKDSB provided an update to the Ontario College of Teachers regarding this matter. Under the Protecting Students Act, 2016, Ontario teachers found guilty of professional misconduct involving sexual offences face a mandatory loss of their teaching certification."
Shaw was 36-year-old at the time of his arrest.
At the beginning of the year, Shaw informed the Ontario College of Teachers that he "will not seek or engage in any employment for which a Certificate of Qualification and Registration is required". His current status is listed as suspended due to non-payment of fees.
