UPDATE: Search of St. Clair River underway following bridge incident

A search of the St. Clair River is underway following an incident in the area of the Blue Water Bridge Wednesday morning.

In a news release, Port Huron Police Assistant Chief Marcy Kuehn said the St. Clair County Central Dispatch received a report of a big, heavy object falling off the center of the span and hitting the water just after 8 a.m.

Port Huron Police responded and discovered an abandoned vehicle, with Canadian license plates, was parked on the U.S. side of the bridge.

The Michigan Department of Transportation tweeted just before 8:30 a.m. about an emergent situation at the international border crossing.

Lambton OPP also shared that the department, assisted by OPP Aviation, was actively searching the area for a missing person.

The bridge was initially closed, and traffic started moving across it again around 9:15 a.m.

The Port Huron Fire Department, St. Clair County Dive Team and United States Coast Guard are assisting in the search of the waterway. -with files from Stephanie Chaves
