Lambton Kent high schools will switch over to regular timetables for their second semester, beginning in February 2022.
The Ontario government announced in mid-November that school boards could return to students having four courses per day in the new year. However, until now, a decision regarding the Semester Two timetable was not finalized.
The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) and St. Clair Catholic District School Board (SCDSB) issued letters last week to those involved in Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton secondary schools.
"From an academic programming perspective, we believe this model to be the best option for student learning and student success. Four classes per day permits a more measured rollout of the curriculum with a greater continuity of learning and student supports," read an update from the LKDSB.
The timetable change will be specific to students who are enrolled in in-person learning.
The change also means students will also have more contact with other students and staff throughout the day. However, public health measures will continue to be observed.
"For students who are not fully immunized against COVID-19, this will mean a greater number of isolations during Semester Two," read an update from the SCCDSB. Fully immunized students who are identified as close contacts are not required to isolate; only to self-monitor for symptoms. They may continue to attend school as long as they are symptom-free."
Both school boards noted that plans could change rapidly based on the COVID-19 pandemic and public health requirements.
"We will, of course, revisit this decision in the event of a change in direction from our local Medical Officers of Health or Public Health Ontario," read the SCCDSB's update.
