Police dog, spike strips help catch suspect

Sarnia police say they had to deploy spike strips and get help from the OPP's canine unit to catch a suspect early Tuesday morning.

At around 2:50 a.m., an officer spotted a vehicle, in the area of Wellington Street and Brock Street, that was missing its front licence plate.

The officer tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the suspect fled southbound on Mitton Street. Police said the suspect continued at a high rate of speed, running red lights and driving in a dangerous manner.

The officer stopped following for safety reasons, but the vehicle was later seen by police in the area of London Road and Indian Road.

The chase continued, and a tire deflation device was successfully deployed near Lakeshore Road and Blackwell Side Road. The vehicle was found parked in the 1900 block of Blackwell Road.

The suspect was tracked by the OPP dog to a garage on the 1900 block of Lakeshore Road, and was taken into custody without incident.

A 26-year-old Windsor man is charged with flight from police, dangerous operation, operation while prohibited, break and enter, trespassing by night, and breach of recognizance.

The accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
