Sarnia police lay drug charges in traffic stops

Sarnia police are reporting two recent impaired driving arrests, and say in both cases the drivers were also charged with drug-related offences.

On February 12, just after 2 a.m., an officer pulled over a vehicle in the area of Wellington Street and Finch Drive after it was driven in an unusual manner.

According to police, the same vehicle was spotted just minutes prior, leaving a bar in the 400 block of Christina Street North.

A 19-year-old woman allegedly failed a roadside screening test, and was arrested. It's alleged a subsequent search of her purse turned up eight grams of suspected cocaine and 24 oxycodone pills.

The accused is charged with operation of a conveyance with 80 milligrams of alcohol or more in 100 millilitres of blood and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.

On February 13, just before 2 a.m., police stopped a possible impaired driver in the 1700 block of London Line, thanks to a tip from a witness.

Police said they were able to safely box the vehicle in and prevent it from moving.

It's alleged a search of the vehicle found further evidence of alcohol consumption and evidence of drug trafficking.

Police said they confiscated a digital weigh scale with suspected cocaine residue along with $3,500 in cash. The accused was then transported for further breath tests resulting in readings that were twice the legal limit.

A 29-year-old Forest man was charged with operation of a conveyance with 80 mg of alcohol or more in 100 ml of blood and one count of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Both suspects had their vehicles impounded for one week, and were issued 90 day drivers licence suspensions.

Each will have a court appearance in Sarnia on March 9.
