Local women win big with instant games

Two local women, who don't typically play instant lotto games, are a little richer after picking up their winnings from the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.

Sheila McCabe of Watford won the top prize of $100,000 with an Instant Crossword Tripler game.

The OLG said the 68-year-old retail worker bought the crossword game "as a treat" as she usually plays Lottario.

“I was playing my ticket in my truck while on a break at work and started counting the words I was revealing,” she said in a statement. “I was excited when I thought I won $50 – when I noticed more words, I was shocked!”

McCabe said she plans to use her winnings to purchase a trailer to enjoy the summers while outdoors.

The winning crossword ticket was purchased at Mac’s Watford on Nauvoo Road in Watford.

Meantime, Jacqueline Van Dommelen of Port Lambton won $1,000 a week for life with Instant Cash for Life. However, she opted to take a lump sum payment of $675,000 instead.

The 30-year-old mother said she typically plays Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49 and only occasionally plays instant games.

“I picked this ticket up on a whim while purchasing my regular tickets,” she said. “I played it while waiting for dinner to cook. The first game I played revealed three cash for life symbols – I thought my heart was going to pound right out of my chest!”

Van Dommelen said her husband was in disbelief when she told him. She plans to put the winnings towards her children's education.

“I’m overjoyed to know my kids will be able to start their adult life without student loans,” she said. “We’re also considering splurging and buying a boat so we can enjoy family time together.”

The winning ticket was purchased at Taylor Convenience on Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg.
