Fire Dept. celebrates arrival of new pumper trucks
The Plympton-Wyoming Fire Department is celebrating the arrival of two new custom pumper trucks.
A traditional "push-in" ceremony is being held on Monday, May 2 at both the Wyoming and Camlachie stations.
Firefighters will be manually pushing the new fire engines into their respective bay. The Wyoming Station will be hosting this time-honored ritual at 6:00 p.m., and Camlachie Station will follow at 6:45 p.m.
Camlachie's truck is a custom top mount pumper, while the one in Wyoming is a side mount pumper.
The push-in ceremony is a fire service tradition that dates back to the late 1800s when fire departments used hand-drawn pumpers and horse-drawn equipment.
Upon returning to the station after a fire call, the horses could not easily back the equipment into the station, so they were disconnected from the fire equipment and firefighters would push the equipment back into the bay themselves.
The Rosenbauer brand Custom Pumpers were purchased from ResQtech Systems Inc.
