BW Anglers hosting annual kids training day

School aged children will learn the ins and outs of fishing and water safety during the Bluewater Anglers' annual kids training day, coming up on Saturday.

Coordinator John Klazinga says upwards of 100 kids, aged six to 12 will take part.

"We teach them how to cast a fishing line, then we teach them how to tie a simple fishing knot," said Klazinga. "From there, they get to catch a fish out of a pond. If you can imagine a little six-year-old girl fishing a 10 to 12 pound fish out of a pond, they're just as excited as all can be."

Representatives from the OPP's marine division, Canadian Coast Guard and Ministry of Natural Resources will be on hand.

Klazinga said the Friends of the St. Clair River will be presenting the Bluewater Anglers with a cheque for $5,000 which will go toward their popular school hatchery program.

"We have approximately 12 schools where we place an aquarium in each school," he said. "Each school gets 30 salmon eggs. The kids get to watch the eggs hatch, they feed them and then when it comes time to release them into the wild, they do that when we release our fish out of the hatchery."

The free event takes place at the Point Edward Hatchery, under the Blue Water Bridge from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Registration is required by contacting Jo-Anne at 519-383-0873.
