Sarnia-Lambton Rebound is looking to form focus groups before launching an Intersectionality to Inclusivity (i2i) drop-in program this fall.
The new program is expected to start in October for youth between the ages of eight and 24, who are members of a racialized group or an ally in combating racism.
Client Service Team Member and i2i Program Coordinator Myckayla Mentus said there are many programs to support diverse groups in the community but there aren't many programs dedicated to those who are racially diverse.
"So this program was kind of my idea to allow this space where youth can really feel that sense of belonging and come and connect with people and feel like they're a part of their community," she said.
Mentus said instances of racism may not be something all Sarnia-Lambton residents are aware of because it doesn't directly affect them, but it is something that is present within the community.
"There have definitely been some pretty negative experiences focused on my race and my racial identity. Having slurs yelled at me on the street or being stared at when I came into public spaces and just not really feeling represented. You don't notice those things until it's happening to you," she said. "Because Sarnia-Lambton is a dominantly Caucasian society, it's very hard for people to open their eyes to see what's happening around them."
Rather than Mentus using her experiences to develop a program for youth, the non-profit organization wants to hear directly from younger age groups.
"We want to really focus on the three separate age groups so that's eight to 12, 13 to 17, and 18 to 24. The purpose of the focus groups throughout the summer is to really see what is important to our youth in our community," said Mentus.
The focus groups will ask youth what topics they would like to discuss and how they want to learn about racial diversity.
"I really want to get their feedback to make this program as useful for them [as possible]," she said.
Mentus said she would also like to have allies associated with the group to make the area a safer and more welcoming community.
Rebound hopes to host focus groups twice in July and twice in August.
