Graduating students at Lambton College waited anxiously to walk across the stage Wednesday afternoon, during the first in-person convocation ceremony since 2019.
More than 600 graduates took part in the formal celebration at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
The rite of passage was missed the last two years due to COVID-19. Instead, socially distanced convocation parades were held in 2020 and 2021.
Bluewater Health Chief of Staff Dr. Michel Haddad was this year's convocation speaker and was presented with an honorary diploma in Health Management and Leadership Development.
He apologized for any missed experiences or opportunities students faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"But I'm also very confident that you will come to see that you've gained something else," said Haddad during his speech. "I'd like to suggest that you're stronger, more determined, and resilient, and perhaps even more grateful than the previous classes because of your experiences."
Laura Seys received the Governor General's Academic Medal, which is given to a graduate who earns the highest standing in their institution. Seys studied to become an esthetician.
The following awards were given to students who exhibited leadership abilities, were involved in extra-curricular activities, and contributed to the college and the community.
Carlie Duncan, occupational therapist assistant and physiotherapist assistant, was awarded the Alumni Association Leadership Award. The Board of Governors Award was given to Grusha Kaur Sawhney, a business management - international business graduate.
Lambton College's 55th convocation ceremony was also livestreamed for those who couldn't attend the event in-person.
