Sarnia Council Briefs

Sarnia council has asked staff to report back on ways to accommodate service and delivery vehicles along Lakeshore Road, especially between Modeland Road and Blackwell Road, where there are no side streets.

A bylaw was passed by council in December to prohibit on-street parking on both sides of the road, between Murphy Road and Telfer Road.

General Manager of Engineering and Operations David Jackson said the cost and ability to create permit designated parking zones will be discussed again with the County of Lambton.

J.D. Lawn Service made another appeal to Sarnia council Monday, asking that other options be considered.

The business showed a number of videos to demonstrate accessibility concerns for workers trying to get their equipment in and out of properties along that stretch.

Lambton County Council supported the lawn care company's request in principle during its May 4 meeting.

Staff have been directed to re-allocate funding to upgrade security at Tecumseh Park.

Mayor Mike Bradley has said the city is spending a lot of money to upgrade the property and wants to protect its investment.

Sarnia council has supported a strategy to withdraw from the management of the blue box program after June 30, 2023.

All municipal blue box programs in the province will be transitioned to producer responsible organizations (PROs) by January 1, 2026.

General Manager of Engineering and Operations David Jackson provided council with an example.

"Kellogg's or other companies who make cardboard or plastic bottles, they've had to create a non-profit, which they fund, who will now coordinate recycling province-wide," said Jackson.

The PROs will also implement a province-wide common material list, group municipalities in catchment areas, and discontinue service to institutions and commercial properties.

A summer transit schedule has been approved.

On peak routes 3/4 and 6/7 will be suspended, routes 8 and 14 will be combined during the day, service will be increased to Bright's Grove, the Park Express will be re-implemented and Sunday service will be increased to mirror the Saturday level.

The city said the route modifications will reduce the amount of overtime required.

Sarnia council has directed staff to forward a proposed increased set fine of $400 for heavy trucks in restricted areas to the Ministry of the Attorney General for approval.

Councillor George Vandenberg said commercial vehicles are routinely exiting the Highway 402 at Modeland Road and "sneaking through the city" to avoid bridge backups.

Councillor Mike Stark said increased policing and penalties are also needed from the Ministry of Transportation for vehicles not adhering to emergency detour routes (EDRs).
