Young Sarnia students plan charitable garage sale

Three girls are hoping to inspire other children to help those in need as they sell their old toys during a charity garage sale.

Eight-year-old Ava Salem, eight-year-old Amisha Duggal, and seven-year-old Brooke Reiger are organizing a garage sale to take place on Saturday. The girls want to raise money to donate to the Inn of the Good Shepherd.

"All three of them came together because they've seen other people helping in the community and also [saw] my older daughters doing it too," said Parveen Duggal. "They were like 'we want to do something,' and we said 'yes, we can work as a team!' They are giving their own toys, clothes, and they made crafts."

Other household items will be for sale and Ava will also be selling lemonade. Kernels Popcorn has donated 50 bags of popcorn for the garage sale as well.

"We also have an anonymous donor who's going to match everything we make," said Duggal.

The three girls met at Cathcart Boulevard Public School and have been friends since Kindergarten. So far they have received support from their classmates and teachers.

"They said that they all might come to the garage sale," said Amisha. "We are happy and we enjoy giving back to the community."

Brooke said she's excited to help people in need and Ava said she's looking forward to hopefully selling a lot of items this weekend.

Ava's mother, Angela Gannon, said they're proud of the initiative their girls have taken.

"I think this is a great idea that they've come up with and I think we're proud of the initiative that they're taking. I think they're excited to kind of take this leadership role," said Gannon.

The charity garage sale will take place at 1777 Modeland Road in Sarnia from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on June 18. One hundred per cent of the funds raised will be donated.
