'Beats on the Street' to drum up support for youth mental health

After a two-year hiatus, Beats on the Street will return to downtown Sarnia for a fifth year, beginning Friday.

Organizer Nelson Mella said this year's fundraiser will support ACCESS Open Minds.

Although a fundraising goal hasn't been set, Mella said they're hoping to see about 800 people attend. The two-day event will feature about 16 acts.

"We also have a world-touring multi-horn, multi-drummer, multi-singer brass funk dance party, they're known as My Son the Hurricane," said Mella. "We have a DJ-drummer duo, one of the official DJs of the Calgary Stampede... all sorts of DJs from London, Toronto, and the Sarnia area."

The music genres will vary.

The event will be held in the parking lot of Refined Fool Brewing Co. on Davis Street. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 or at the gate for $25.

Beats on the Street has raised a total of $15,000 over the years for charitable organizations including the Huntington Society of Canada, Noelle’s Gift, St. Joseph’s Hospice, and St. Clair Child and Youth Services.

ACCESS Open Minds is a youth mental health facility, located in downtown Sarnia, that's expected to open later this year.
