Lambton Enactus president wins international award

A Lambton College student has won a prestigious international award.

Andrea Prins recently received the Gold Outstanding Student Achievement Award from the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) Secretariat.

Program Officer Lyne Dalby said Prins was one of over 100 nominations WFCP received for this year's awards, including roughly 10 nominations for the student achievement category.

"Our panel of judges concluded that due to Andrea's academic achievements, resilience, community involvement and commitment to reconciliation efforts with Indigenous communities across Canada, she exemplifies the core values of what it means to be an outstanding student," said Dalby.

Prins is the outgoing president of the Enactus Lambton group, a position she's held for two years.  She talked about her work with Project One Circle, an initiative that helps Indigenous communities establish sustainable food security.

"I've been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on this project over the past two years and really see it grow and thrive in First Nations not only local to us but also across Canada."

Prins is enrolled in the Business Administration Accounting program and has one year remaining of part-time studies.

The Leamington native said she was honoured that Lambton chose to nominate her for the award.

"I can't even give you a number of how many students that they could have nominated, so it's pretty humbling that I was the one that they chose."

Prins said while she wasn't able to attend this month's award ceremony in Spain, she feels very fortunate to have placed first.

Lambton College also received an award, winning the Bronze in Applied Research & Innovation.  Dalby said the award recognizes an institution or institutional association that has demonstrated excellence in addressing real-world challenges through applied research.

"Our panel of judges concluded that Lambton College's Research and Innovation Department, which is home to six research centres, is a leader in Canada for establishing successful research and innovation operations."
