Public school board shines light on treaty rights

The Lambton Kent District School Board is teaching students about treaty rights and relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

November 6 to 12 marks Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario, a commemoration established in 2016 out of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.

LKDSB said its joining schools across the province in promoting education and awareness surrounding the importance of treaties and obligations to honour the original promises of the land.

Director of Education John Howitt said in a media release that the school board works with Indigenous communities throughout the school year to provide educational opportunities that honour the cultures of First Nation, Métis, and Inuit people.

“Treaties Recognition Week is part of ongoing conversations in our classrooms around Indigenous histories and relationships," said Howitt. "This week provides another opportunity for us to deepen our knowledge and take action towards truth and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.”

The release said LKDSB appreciates the support and partnership of First Nations to collectively promote education and mutual understanding of Indigenous rights and perspectives.
