Plympton-Wyoming exploring short-term rental regulations

Another Lambton County community is looking at regulating short-term rentals (STRs).

Plympton-Wyoming is hosting two open houses Tuesday, and then another two next month, to understand the community's wants and needs regarding STRs.

Senior Planner Sarah Baldwin said over the past few years, the town and council have received concerns about some houses being used partially or exclusively as short-term rentals.

"So the town council would like to explore whether regulations are needed," said Baldwin. "Parking on the street or the noise are sort of two bigger [complaints], and also with not feeling 100 per cent comfortable with people that they don't know next door."

Baldwin said after reviewing popular rental platforms, including Airbnb and Vrbo, there appears to be approximately 100 short-term rentals in the communities.

"Some people are very much for [STRs], some people are against and everything in between," said Baldwin. "And then based on the feedback and the survey that the town had running through April and May, we'll be formulating some regulations if that's the direction that it seems that we should be going."

Tuesday's open houses go from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Camlachie Community Centre. Two more open houses, set for July 18, will be held at the same times and place.
