Local hunter fined, suspended for unlawfully killing moose

A Corunna man has been fined $13,000 after he was found guilty of hunting a bull moose in the Ignace area without a licence.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry released details of the case on Friday after the matter went to court on June 29.

On October 19, 2019, the accused harvested a moose without a tag while hunting in the Ignace area, which is northwest of Thunder Bay. He then transported the whole moose to southern Ontario to be processed, read the media release.

In addition to being fined, the accused was suspended from hunting in Ontario for six years.

The investigation included witness statements, a search warrant, and DNA analysis. Items seized as part of the investigation were forfeited to the Crown.

The ministry identified the accused as Christopher Brown.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
